Whether you are a classic deli loyalist or someone who treats lunch like a daily adventure, a great sandwich has a way of turning an ordinary day into something worth savoring. From hot pressed favorites to sweet frozen treats, every state has its own cravings and plenty of strong opinions.
To find out what Americans are hungry for right now, we used Google Trends data to identify the most searched-for sandwich in every state over the past year. Read on to see which sandwiches topped the list, where they are most popular, and what patterns popped up across the country.
Each State’s Most-Searched-For Sandwich

Here’s what the data shows across the country:
Turkey sandwich – 7 states
A consistent favorite nationwide, the turkey sandwich ranks as the most searched-for option in seven states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Washington. Its widespread appeal, simple ingredients, and everyday versatility likely help explain why it performs so well across multiple regions, particularly in the West and central U.S.
Grilled cheese sandwich – 7 states
Tied for first place with the turkey sandwich, grilled cheese tops the list in seven states: Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The comfort-food favorite shows a clear regional trend, with strong popularity across the Midwest and Appalachia.
Pastrami on rye – 4 states
The pastrami on rye takes the top spot in four states: California, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York. Two clear regional pairings stand out here: California and Nevada form a Western cluster, and New Jersey and New York anchor its popularity in the Northeast, reflecting strong deli traditions in both areas.

- Brisket sandwich: Georgia and Texas
- Club sandwich: Mississippi and South Carolina
